Latest Weight Loss news Recent research has indicated a low protein high carb diet seems to have a 2.5lb advantage in average weight lost over a 12 week period over a traditional low fat/ high carb type diet. This brings up the question that somehow the high protein diet offers some kind of metabolic advantage.

 A recent review of several studies on diet composition by Dr. Dale Schoeller and Dr Andrea Bucholz postulates that the effectiveness of high protein/low carb diets over traditional lowfat/high carb diets is due to greater hunger satiation due to the extra protein intake, and not any kind of increased caloric expediture due to diet composition. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but this doesn't consider long considerations such as acid base balance on the kidneys from excess protein intake. The 10 week study on rats looked at the difference in vo2max trained at 85-90% Vo2max capacity versus training at 65-70% max capacity. The results of the study suggested that significantly higher benefits in v02max capacity resulted from higher intensity training. Friggin great. It takes a study to say the obvious. It's official - Chitosan fat trappers suck, A recent study by two scientists for UC Davis examined the effectiveness of Chitosan at it's claimed ability by many supplement manufacturers to trap and bind fat. In a double bind study of 12 men and 12 women over a 12 day period, the researchers studied the affects of taking 2 capsules 5 times per day. Stool samples were examined and analyzed for fat content. The net result was that fecal fat excretion from was not significantly increased. Effectively, no fat was trapped. Time to toss the fat trappers. Don't get too depressed. For the sake of good taste, I had to toss the alternate title " Stool samples prove Chitosan is crap!"

Vegetarians really do age slower, A recent study at Hong Kong polytechnic has demonstrated that the important biomarkers identifying the presence of important anti-oxidants and lower risk for cardiovascular disease tend to be higher in vegetarian diets than omnivores. Vegetarians have higher fasting plasma AA concentrations which act as a key biomarker of overall health. Vegetables...those are carbs, right?

Study of Lean System 7, A recent study by the Minnesota Applied Research Center has been concluded on the over the counter product Lean System 7. The purpose of the study was to see if a commercially available product could counter the lowering of metabolic rate that occurs when dieting. Over an 8 week period, healthy overweight adults took 3 capsules per day, engaged in moderate exercise, and cut calories. The Lean System 7 group showed a 7% increase in metabolic rate WHILE restricting calories vs a 7% reduction in metabolic rate for a placebo group during the same period. Very good news for people looking to take weight off quickly. More importantly, kudo's to the Lean System folks. Too few commercial products are ever put through double blind studies.

Interval Training

Get more out of less time on the treadmill.

If you want to really drop fat fast dump the steady pace on the treadmill in favor of interval training. To start, try a pyramid 6 program. Do six intervals on a treadmill increasing the speed setting with each interval. Start at 60% of the treadmill max speed for 30 seconds. Jog in between your intervals. Set your next interval to 70% the max of the treadmill for 30 seconds. Repeat this until you max out the treadmill settings and hold for 45 seconds at top speed. Warm down with a 10 minute jog and stretch when finished. Do this 3 times per week and you will kick your fat loss in high gear.

If you are looking to lose weight do yourself a favor and get your metabolic resting rate tested. Many local gyms now offer the service through a simple gas exchange breath test for about $30-50 bucks. It's astounding how many people begin a diet that involves calorie control without knowing their metabolic requirements. It's simply impossible to lose fat unless you take in fewer calories than you burn. Unless you know exactly how many calories you need, your simply wasting your time. I can't recommend getting this done too strongly. It's essential.
